Welcome to Challah Daddy, I'm Marty. Here's what you knead to know.
I'm only half serious part of the time. I get chummy quick. I hate that I like to over share. I swear like a Sailor, mostly cause I (kinda) was one for a bit. Also I f__king love food.
Imagine a world in complete panic. The shelves of every grocery store are empty. Yeast? Gone! Flour? Gone! Toilet paper? Ebay! Job? What the f__k is that?! I was personally effected by the pandemic because I worked in a restaurant. Fortunately I worked at a great restaurant. They supported the hell out of us, it was so awesome! They packed groceries for us, made us meal kits, gave us rolls of that almighty TP. They helped us make it through the hard times and it was spectacular. Thank YOU, M&A!
During this excessive time at home, I came to an awesome realization. I am spending every Shabbat with my wife and daughter. We get to sit at a table, zoom with family, and eat dinner together. I was there to participate and enjoy for the first time ever. But what I really wanted to figure out, was how can I contribute? And the one way I knew how, was through food, most notably - Challah. I found the largest bag (50lbs) of flour still available, and scavenged for yeast to start making my FIL challah recipe. His was my inspiration because this was the first Challah I learned to make. A story for another time. And there will be another time.
Suffice to say I fell hard for the life style. A couple months into it I started an instagram account show casing my weekly bakes. There was instant gratification from the hearts that were tapped around my photos. There was a community that started to include me. There are friendships budding.
Man, was this a drug? It kinda feels that way at times, and I'm thankful for it. Proud folks from all over the world making bread, and sharing it for inspiration. Who doesn't want to be part of that community?
I would now like to give others the opportunity to share their own stories, experiences, and past weeks around the bread I create. Call on me for that braided goodness and rely on the fact that you have one less thing to do on shabbat.
You set the table, I'll make the bread.
-Marty
